Learner is required to participate in on-the-job, employer practical training and a practical evaluation to be deemed competent.

Chain saws, if used improperly, can instantly deliver significant, life altering injuries. Employers are required to provide training for all workers who are permitted or instructed to use a chain saw. Supervisors who oversee workers using chain saws should also be trained on the proper use of chain saws. Saskatchewan has specific legislation that speaks to the use of chain saws, as well as specific required protective measures. Regulations in other Canadian jurisdictions can also apply in the workplace and are considered in the course.

The course includes chainsaw types, chainsaw PPE, inspections and operations. This course is designed by referencing Saskatchewan provincial legislation.

Learners will be required to complete Practical on the job training with their employer, under guidance of a competent operator, and complete a practical evaluation before being certified by their employer to be a competent operator themselves.

Recertification can be completed by challenging the Confined Space Monitoring & Entry exam 3 years following initial training. After 6 years from initial training, or if the certificate expires prior to renewal, the entire training will need to be retaken.

Qualification: Meet 80% on a written exam.

Confined Space Entry has been identified as one of the greatest hazards in industrial worksites. Six safety associations from Saskatchewan have collaborated to develop this training course. It will be instructor led either in a classroom or through a webinar delivery.

Working within a confined space can be one of the most dangerous jobs performed on a worksite. An incident inside of, or around a confined space can cause significant injury and even death. Saskatchewan provincial legislation has very specific regulations governing confined space entry. It is imperative that anyone entering and/or monitoring a confined space have the training needed to understand the potential hazards of working in a confined space, and the knowledge of how to assess and control hazards prior to, and during, entry.

This course includes approximately 8 hours of theory. Emphasis is placed on providing participants with the ability to identify and assess confined spaces, recognize, and control the hazards, awareness of confined space personal protective equipment and monitoring equipment, and instruction on how to prepare entry plans.

This course is designed to meet or exceed Saskatchewan provincial legislation, industry best practices, and references applicable standards. Participants must meet the mandatory 80% class performance standard on a written exam. Upon successful completion of this course a certificate will be accessible to the student. Course participants receive a manual which includes the course content covered including excerpts of the applicable Saskatchewan provincial legislation.

Practical Application: SASM and SCSA have teamed up with White Rabbit, a local software developer to produce a 3D virtual reality, confined space training scenario. This is being made available to members who attend the training class but will have to be completed live in a classroom. As a value-added training tool, the virtual reality software puts the workers into a confined space where the learning objectives are real, but no physical harm can come to them. Virtual reality will familiarize learners with the requirements when entering a confined space, but employers must still complete site-specific practical training when the workers return to the facility.

Certificate: This certificate is valid for 3-years. Recertification can be completed by challenging the Fall Protection & Prevention exam. This must be completed prior to expiration of the 3-year certificate.

Qualification: Meet 80% on a written test and complete practical inspection and donning of personal fall protection harness.

Other Requirements: Participants must come prepared with appropriate fitting Fall Protection Harness for the practical component.

In Saskatchewan, employees required to work at heights of three meters or more and who are required to wear fall protection equipment must be trained before starting work. Provincial legislation has very specific guidelines governing fall protection and prevention. It is imperative that anyone working from heights has the training to understand the potential hazards and preventive measures.

This one-day course is designed in collaboration amongst partner Safety Associations throughout the province to provide consistency and quality standards around Fall Protection that references Saskatchewan Legislative requirements, industry best practices, and CSA Standards. Course participants receive a manual encompassing the course content covered including excerpts from applicable provincial legislation.

Delivery of this course takes place through instructor led training, in person or webinar training. This course covers the Legislative roles and responsibilities for employers, supervisors and workers, as it applies to fall prevention. Participants will gain an understanding of identifying hazards and the different methods used to mitigate risks, including the donning of a harness. Equipment demonstrations, section reviews and guided discussions are used throughout this course to provide a positive learning experience.

To demonstrate competency, there is a practical inspection of the personal fall protection harness followed by a graded written examination. Participants must meet the mandatory 80% class performance standard on the written exam.

Competency with the Fall Protection equipment and its proper use on a worksite remains the responsibility of the Employer. Employers must ensure they are satisfied that their workers are doing things the right way.

They allow movement of loads and the ability to store at heights to be completed with relative ease and helps to reduce the number of workplace injuries, by replacing lifting and carrying with mechanically aided movement of loads. Because of the height at which forklifts can operate, incidents represent a significant risk of catastrophic consequences. Saskatchewan provincial legislation has very specific regulations governing the training required for operators of forklifts and this course meets those requirements.

The course content for the online and in classroom versions is the same, but delivery in classroom may take slightly longer. Whether theory training is done online or in the classroom there is always a requirement that it be followed up by periods of supervised forklift operation conducted by a competent operator, and a practical evaluation on each type of forklift to be operated. Investigations are required by numerous regulations and are an indication to the workers that the firm cares about the employees’ well-being. Firms must have a policy directing their investigation program and must be able to prove not only that investigations have been performed, but that corrections have been made where substandard acts or conditions were found. Investigations must be focused on finding the root cause of incidents and correcting those causes.

SASM’s Internal Auditor course has been developed based on SASM’s Certificate of Recognition program. Participants will work with both the Certificate of Recognition Standards and SASM’s Bronze and Silver audit tools. This course will provide learners with the ability to audit a safety management system for an organization of any size based on SASM’s audit criteria.

Internal auditing is an independent and objective examination, monitoring and analysis of a company’s management systems. Internal auditors can be used in various capacities, such as: preparing your organization for a certification audit or maintaining your certification by completing your 1st year and/or 2nd year maintenance audits. Learners will be taken on a step-by-step journey through the auditing of a safety management system. SASM’s audit scoring is based on 45% documentation, 23% observation & 32% employee interviews. The learner will be instructed on what to look for in each of the 21 audit elements. Students will also be introduced to pre-audit preparation, reporting on audit findings, action plans and follow-up.

This course is designed to meet or exceed provincial legislation, CSA standards, industry best practices, and international standards, such as the CSA Z1000 and OHSAS 18001 standard for safety management systems, and ISO 19011 standard for auditing management systems.

SASM’s Internal Auditor course includes approximately 16 hours of theory where students will work both independently and in groups.  Learners will receive an instructional manual that includes a copy of the Certification Standard as well as the audit tools. Materials are provided in both hard and electronic copy. Upon completion of this course a certificate of attendance will be available to the student.

SASM’s instructors are experienced auditors with industry specific auditor training, and/or national/international training to OHSAS, ISO, and CSA standards. All of our instructors have formal post secondary education in health, safety and/or environmental management systems.

Every year in Canada workers are injured or killed because equipment, machinery or processes were not properly locked out. Employees servicing, maintaining, repairing, cleaning and replacing machinery or equipment may be exposed to serious physical harm or death if hazardous energy is not properly controlled.

Saskatchewan provincial legislation requires employers to identify existing or potential risks to the health and safety of their employees, and to reduce or control the identified risks. The purpose of lockout is to prevent the exposure to unexpected energization or start-up of machines and equipment, or the release of stored energy. Course content concentrates on identifying the hazards associated with uncontrolled energy and the proper methods of controlling that energy through a soundly developed and implemented lockout program.

In this course we will review the regulations and applicable standards (CSA, ANSI and ISO) as they relate to the basic safety and management of various aerial lifts in the workplace. Aerial lifts are now referred to as mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and is a term that covers a wide range of different devices you may encounter at a manufacturing facility. MEWPs have been rapidly replacing more traditional methods of working at different heights over the last 15 to 20 years. They provide many advantages over traditional ladders, hoists, and fixed scaffolding. Because they are motorized and don’t require many hours of set up, most businesses will have at least one MEWP in use at any given time. Your safety depends on your proper use and maintenance of these important devices.

The training requirements for MEWP have changed because of the revised standards.  This requirement now extends beyond operators to have training and includes others who will come in contact with a MEWP on the job site.

SASM’s three-day OHS committee/representative course targets reducing loss by engaging the workforce to help design and build a better workplace. Saskatchewan Occupational Health & Safety Legislation (Tables 7 & 8) indicates which firms must have a OHS committee or representative, but best OHS practices indicate that all firms should have a committee or representative. 

This course will help provide learners with tools to build safety into their everyday activities and to engage the workforce in managing workplace safety. Emphasis is placed on providing students with a better understanding of the underlying principles and mindsets that can lead to, or prevent, an incident such as unsafe behaviours, unsafe conditions and an understanding of loss prevention. This course provides a knowledge base for understanding and satisfying legislated duties in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act (SEA) and Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Regulations.

Based on the OHS Committee course developed by Sask. Occupational Health and Safety (now Labour Relations and Workplace Safety – LRWS) SASM’s Committee/Representative course goes deeper into investigations, inspections systems and how a safety management system is actually supposed to work. Focus is placed upon instilling an understanding of worker rights and the responsibilities of employers, managers, supervisors and workers, in addition to the role of the Occupational Health & Safety Committee. Overhead cranes and hoists are critical to the efficient operation on many industrial operations. They move loads both large and small with accuracy and speed. Because of the weight of the loads being lifted, crane and hoist incidents represent a significant risk of catastrophic consequences. Saskatchewan provincial legislation has very specific regulations governing the training required for operators of hoists and cranes and this course meets those requirements.

This course includes approx. 6 - 8 hours of theory (online, in classroom). The course content for the online and in classroom versions is the same but delivery in classroom may take longer. Whether theory training is done online or in the classroom there is always a requirement that it be followed up by a practical evaluation and a period of supervised operation conducted by a qualified person.

This course references Saskatchewan provincial legislation, industry best practices, and applicable standards. Participants must meet the mandatory 80% class performance standard on a written exam. Upon successful completion of this course a certificate will be accessible to the student. Course participants receive a manual which includes the course content covered including excerpts of the applicable legislation.

The Practical Evaluator course is designed to certify supervisors or competent crane/hoist operators as practical evaluators. Learning outcomes include an overview of regulatory requirements, how to prepare for an evaluation, evaluation methodology, and scoring the evaluation.

Competency

With crane usage, competency is measured in different ways depending on the crane or job being performed.

Competent Worker – Theory training, close supervision from someone deemed competent until they learn safe operation and has passed a practical evaluation on the crane, would be authorized to operate cranes on their own that are rated for a capacity less than 5 Tonnes.

Competent Operator – Theory training, min of 40 documented hours while under close supervision from a competent operator, and has passed a practical evaluation on the crane, would be authorized to operate cranes on their own that are rated for a capacity of 5 Tonnes or greater.

Lifting Personnel

Operators wishing to lift personnel using a crane must ensure that they are using a certified man-basket, and must have crane theory training, must be a Competent Operator with a min of 200 documented hours of crane operation while under close supervision of another competent operator, and must pass a practical evaluation dedicated to man-lift operations. All lifts prior to qualification are done with no-one in the basket.

Workers who are required or allowed to wear respiratory protection must receive training on the hazards associated with the chemicals or particulates in the atmosphere and on the use of respiratory protection equipment. Saskatchewan Provincial legislation has very specific guidelines governing respiratory protection. It is imperative that anyone using respiratory protection equipment have the training needed to understand the potential hazards.

The course content for the online and in classroom versions is the same but delivery in classroom may take longer with the inclusion of examples from the trainer, breaks and questions and discussions that arise when presented in person. Emphasis is placed on providing participants with the ability to perform a respiratory hazard assessment, properly wear and create an effective seal and use, inspect, and maintain the respiratory protection equipment.

A Return to Work Program is aimed to helping injured workers stay at work or return to safe and suitable employment as soon as health permits, following a workplace injury. A Return to Work Program provides modified or accommodated duties and/or graduated work schedules as needed to help injured workers come back to work while they are recovering from their injury or illness. 

The goal is to facilitate a safe and timely return to work, prevent further injuries and optimize the worker’s recovery. The best approach is to have your Return to Work Program and policies in place before a workplace injury occurs – but it is never too late to start.

A safety management system (SMS) must be integrated into the management system(s) of an entire organization.  “Safety” often exists due to workplace culture, but every SMS must be able to prove the safety related activities and results with documentation.  Typically, safety documentation that can prove due diligence above and beyond the legal requirements is one of the hardest areas to manage and is often the reason that firms do not pass an audit.

This course will help provide learners with the skill, knowledge and tools to develop and operate a SMS. Learners will be taken on a step-by-step journey through the development, implementation and operation of a SMS based on SASM’s Bronze and Silver level audit tools. The course begins with the policies and continues through the intricate steps of each element. Samples of numerous documents are presented and worked through in order to provide learners with hands on experience. Real world examples are presented, and learners are encouraged to discuss how each element of a SMS can be applied to their workplaces.

The Safety Management Administrator course is based on SASM’s Bronze and Silver level certification programs.

This course includes 5 days of theory and is designed for individuals who may not be safety personnel but who are tasked with the duty of administrating the SMS for their firm. This may include administrative staff, safety coordinators, human resource personnel and middle to upper management. Previous safety knowledge or training is not required. Learners will receive a manual as well as samples of policies, procedures, and forms for each of the 19 separate elements required by SASM’s audit tools.

Learners will be taken through the development, implementation and operation of a SMS based on SASM’s Bronze and Silver level audit tools. The course begins with the policies and continues through the steps of each element. Samples of documents are presented and worked through in order to provide learners with hands on experience. Real world examples are presented and learners are encouraged to discuss how each element of a SMS can be applied to their workplaces.

The Safety Management Administrator course is based on SASM’s Bronze and Silver level certification program, references legislated requirements as well as the CSA Z1000 and OHSAS 18001 international standards for SMSs.

This course includes 2 days of theory and is designed for individuals who are responsible to develop and/or manage the SMS for their firm. Previous safety knowledge or training is not required. Learners will receive a manual as well as samples of policies, procedures and forms for each of the 21 separate elements required by SASM’s audit tools. Materials are provided in both hard and electronic copy.

Students will receive an attendance certificate after completing the 2 day course.

Qualification: Meet 80% on written test

Skid Steer equipment is becoming a standard for many industrial operations. The multiple attachments offer versatility to accomplish many different tasks.  Because of the height skid steers can reach, the multiple attachments and the unique steering arrangement, skid steer equipment has been involved in incidents with catastrophic consequences.  Saskatchewan provincial legislation has very specific regulations governing the training required for operators of skid steers and this course meets those requirements.

This course includes approximately 6 hours of theory in classroom for the operator. After passing the theory portion of the course there is always a requirement that it be followed up by a period of supervised operation conducted by a qualified person, and a practical evaluation on the type of attachment to be operated. All of this must be documented by management within the company.

This course references Saskatchewan provincial legislation, industry best practices, and applicable standards. Participants must meet the mandatory 80% class performance standard on a written exam. Upon successful completion of this course a certificate will be accessible to the student. Course participants receive a manual which includes the course content covered including excerpts of the applicable Saskatchewan provincial legislation.

The Practical Evaluator course is designed to certify supervisors or competent skid steer operators as practical evaluators. Learning outcomes include an overview of regulatory requirements, how to prepare for an evaluation, evaluation methodology, and scoring the evaluation.

Certificate: Does not expire; refresher training recommended every three years. Upon successful completion of the course a certificate and wallet card will be accessible to the student.

Qualification: Meet 80% on written test. 

Telehandlers (also known as zoom booms or extended reach forklifts) are relatively recent adaptation of forklifts to add extended horizontal reach capabilities. As such, their operation is a hybrid of forklift and mobile crane operation. They can lift quite high, but their extended horizontal capacity adds a very substantial level of complexity.

The opportunity to have incidents with catastrophic consequences is quite high. Saskatchewan provincial legislation has very specific regulations governing the training required for operators of powered mobile equipment and this course meets those requirements.

The course content for the online and in classroom versions is the same, but delivery in classroom may take longer with the inclusion of examples from the trainer, breaks and questions and discussions that arise when presented in person. Whether theory training is done online or in the classroom there is always a requirement that it be followed up by periods of closely supervised operation conducted by a qualified person, followed by a practical evaluation prior to an operator being allowed to work on their own. All of this must be documented by management within the company.

This course is for employees who are required to work with hazardous materials or who work within the proximity of hazardous materials. Most workplaces have enough hazardous materials onsite to seriously injure personnel so workers must be trained on the hazards associated with chemicals or particulate matter and how to protect themselves. Both Federal and provincial legislation have extremely specific regulations governing workplace hazardous information. It is imperative that anyone who could come in contact with chemicals or hazardous materials have the training needed to understand the potential hazards.

Course content for online and classroom versions is the same but delivery in class may take longer with the inclusion of examples from the trainer, breaks, questions and discussions that arise when presented in person. Emphasis is placed on providing participants with the ability to recognize the hazards, know how to protect themselves and others, and what to do if someone encounters hazardous materials.

This course is designed by referencing Saskatchewan provincial legislation.
